Trekking in the M'goun Mountain 6 days Itinerary
Marrakech to Happy Valley
Depart in the morning by 4×4 or minibus from Marrakech. And drive through the plains toward the High Atlas Mountains, passing through scenic landscapes and small Berber towns. After crossing the town of Azilal, the road winds through dramatic valleys and gorges before reaching the remote village of Agouti, located at the entrance of the Aït Bougmez Valley, also known as the "Happy Valley." This is your base for the start of the trek.
Overnight: Guesthouse or tented camp in Agouti
Drive time: Approx. 5–6 hours
Trek through the berber villages
Today is a gentle introduction to the trek. After breakfast, you begin hiking along a green valley dotted with juniper and walnut trees. The trail climbs gradually toward the Arous Gorge. Passing through terraced fields and isolated Berber hamlets. After about 4–5 hours of trekking, you reach Arous Camp, situated in a beautiful meadow surrounded by cliffs and pine trees. This peaceful campsite serves as a perfect acclimatization spot.
Walking: ~4–5 hours
Overnight: Tent camp at Arous
Atlas Trek
This is one of the more demanding days of the trek. You ascend steadily through alpine landscapes, eventually reaching the Aghouri Pass (3,450 m), which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. After a short break, you descend to the windswept Tarkedit Plateau, a high-altitude plain often used by nomadic shepherds. After lunch on the plateau (2,900 m), you'll climb slightly higher and establish camp at 3,400 m, just below M’Goun West (3,978 m) in preparation for tomorrow’s summit.
🥾 Walking: ~7–8 hours
🛏️ Overnight: Camp at 3,400 m
Djebel M’Goun trek
An early start is essential for summit day. The climb to Djebel M’Goun, North Africa’s second-highest peak, follows a long, exposed ridge above 4,000 meters. The ascent typically takes 4–5 hours depending on conditions. At the summit, enjoy spectacular 360° views stretching across the High Atlas and even into the Sahara on clear days. The descent is steep and technical in parts as you drop down to Oulilimt, a verdant valley flanked by towering cliffs.
Walking: ~8–9 hours
Overnight: Wild camp near Oulilimt / Izabine
Tighermet n’Aït Ahmed
Today’s route follows the Oulilimt River as it winds through a series of lush meadows and narrow valleys. You'll pass Ain Aflafal, a freshwater spring where you can rest and fill water bottles, before continuing toward Tighermet n’Aït Ahmed, a scenic area with stone shelters and caves used by shepherds. Compared to the summit day, this leg is more relaxed, offering time to enjoy the serenity of the mountains and connect with nomadic life.
🥾 Walking: ~5 hours
🛏️ Overnight: Camp near Tighermet
Back to Marrakech
After breakfast, you begin the ascent to Tizi n’Aït Imi (2,960 m), a high mountain pass that serves as the final challenge of your trek. The climb is steady and rewards you with sweeping views over the Bougmez Valley, one of the most fertile and picturesque areas in the High Atlas. After a long descent into the valley, your driver will meet you in Agouti or Tabant, and you'll make the return journey to Marrakech.
🥾 Walking: ~4–5 hours
🚌 Drive time: ~5–6 hours
🛏️ Overnight: Not included (can be arranged)
