Marrakech to edge of anti Atlas
We begin our adventure with an early morning departure from Marrakech. Crossing the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m) the highest road pass in Morocco. Along the way, we pass through Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, and the beautiful Dades Valley, known for its many ancient kasbahs and dramatic rock formations. In the afternoon, we leave the road to drive across a desert plateau, reaching the small village of Tagdilt, located at the base of the Saghro range.
Overnight: Homestay in Tagdilt
Drive time: Approx. 6 hours
Trek in Saghro Mountains
Our trek begins! In the morning, you’ll witness the mules being loaded with supplies and gear—a daily ritual for our mountain team. We walk across a vast, open plateau, gradually ascending to the Tizi n’Iferd Pass (2,400 m), where stunning views of the Central High Atlas await. Descending into the Iferd Plateau, we set up camp in a serene area often used by the semi-nomadic Ait Atta people during their seasonal migrations.
Walking: ~5.5 hours
Overnight: Wild camp at 2,250 m
Discover the volcanic formations of Saghro mount
Today offers both challenge and reward. We hike to the summit of Jebel Kouaouch (2,600 m), a prominent peak in the Saghro Mountains with panoramic views of jagged volcanic formations. After a well-earned summit picnic brought by our cook, we descend through Tassegdilt toward the remote oasis village of Igli, nestled at 1,700 m.
Walking: ~5.5 hours
Overnight: Tented camp in Igli
Morocco Anti Atlas Trek Bab n'ALi
From Igli, we descend through the Afourar Valley, which narrows into scenic gorges as we pass through the tiny oasis of Bouallouz. The path opens into a broad plain dominated by the twin rock towers of Bab n’Ali, one of the Saghro’s most iconic natural landmarks. After exploring the area, we continue to the lush oasis of Ighazzoun, where our tents await.
Walking: ~5 hours
Overnight: Tented camp in the oasis
Explore Berber village
We set out toward the Tifdassine Pass, a gentle climb leading to another valley of the same name. Enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch under almond trees before continuing through lush fields and terraced slopes. The path leads us to Handour, a charming Berber village where we are warmly welcomed into a local home.
Walking: ~5 hours
Overnight: Homestay in Handour
Back to Marrakech
After saying goodbye to our mule team, we follow a short trail to reach the road near Nkob, a town known for its 45 kasbahs. We then drive north, passing through Agdz and back over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. A stop for lunch is made after the pass before we continue to Marrakech, arriving in the late afternoon.
