6 days desert tour from Marrakech Itinerary
Upon arrival at Marrakech Menara Airport, you'll be greeted by your driver and transferred to your hotel or riad in the city. Depending on your arrival time, you may have time to relax or explore the medina’s vibrant souks and landmarks like the Koutoubia Mosque or Jemaa el-Fnaa square. Overnight stay in Marrakech.
Crossing the High Atlas Mountains
Depart Marrakech in the morning and begin your ascent into the stunning High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which sits at an elevation of 2,260 meters. This scenic mountain road offers breathtaking views of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. Along the way, enjoy photo stops and learn about the daily life and culture of the mountain communities that inhabit this remote region.
Explore Aït Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate
After crossing the pass, arrive at the iconic Aït Ben Haddou. A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most striking ksars (fortified villages) in Morocco. Stroll through its narrow alleys, mud-brick buildings, and centuries-old towers, which have served as the backdrop for many famous films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Later, continue to Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Africa," where you can visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah and, if time permits, the Atlas Film Studios. Spend the night in this peaceful desert gateway city.
Depart Ouarzazate and head south toward Agdz, where the road descends into the breathtaking Draa Valley. Morocco’s longest river valley. This stretch of landscape is dotted with fortified kasbahs, ksour (ancient villages). And seemingly endless palm groves that stretch along the riverbanks. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of desert plateaus framed by the Anti-Atlas Mountains. With opportunities to stop for photos and short walks through local villages that seem untouched by time.
Explore the Palm Grove of Zagora
Arrive in Zagora, a tranquil town nestled at the edge of the Sahara Desert. In the afternoon, take a guided walking tour through the expansive Zagora palm grove. One of the largest and most impressive in the country. Learn about the traditional khettara irrigation systems that have sustained local agriculture for centuries, and discover how date palms, henna plants, and vegetables are cultivated in this fertile oasis. This cultural experience offers a deep insight into sustainable desert farming. End your day with dinner and an overnight stay in a charming guesthouse built in traditional Berber style.
Journey Through the Pre-Saharan Landscape
Depart Zagora and journey deeper into Morocco’s remote and arid southeast. The route takes you through the charming desert towns of Tazarine and Alnif. Both set against a backdrop of striking desert plateaus, fossil-rich hills, and rugged mountains. This lesser-traveled path offers glimpses of traditional Berber life and untouched landscapes. Along the way, you may spot nomadic herders or isolated adobe homes clinging to dry riverbeds. As you continue, the terrain gradually changes, revealing hints of the vast dunes to come. By late afternoon, you'll arrive in the village of Merzouga. Nestled at the base of the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes—some of the highest in Morocco.
Camel Trek & Night Under the Stars
Upon arrival in Merzouga, meet your camel caravan and begin a magical sunset trek into the heart of the Sahara. As you ride across the golden sands, watch the landscape transform with the changing light. Casting long shadows and deepening colors over the dunes. After about an hour’s journey, reach your traditional desert camp, where warm hospitality awaits. Settle into your private tent. Enjoy a delicious dinner cooked over an open fire, and relax under a sky glittering with stars. The evening includes live Berber music, drumming, and the serenity that only the desert can offer—an unforgettable cultural and natural experience.
Sunrise in the Dunes & Fossil Town of Erfoud
Begin your day early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the vast Erg Chebbi dunes. A truly magical experience as the desert sands glow with golden hues. After breakfast at the camp, either ride a camel or take a 4x4 back to Merzouga. From there, continue to the town of Erfoud. A hub for fossil discoveries and workshops. ” Erfoud is famous for its unique fossil-rich marble. Which you'll see in local artisanal products and stonework. Optional stops include a fossil museum or a local factory where fossils are polished into art and furniture.
Todra Gorges & Dades Valley Exploration
After Erfoud, drive toward the Todra Gorges. A stunning natural canyon carved by the Todra River. Towering limestone cliffs rise up to 300 meters, forming a narrow passageway that’s popular for walking, photography, and even rock climbing. After exploring the gorge, continue your journey westward through the Berber villages of the Dades Valley, often called the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” The landscape here is surreal. Dotted with red and ochre rock formations, almond trees, and traditional mud-brick homes. Arrive at your accommodation in the heart of the valley, where you’ll enjoy dinner and a peaceful night in a kasbah or guesthouse surrounded by dramatic scenery.
Back toward Marrakech

Complete Moroccan desert adventure
We did the 6 days desert tour from Marrakech with Mimoun in April 2025, and it was truly unforgettable! The journey through the Atlas Mountains, Dades Valley, and the remote desert landscapes was breathtaking. Camel trekking in the Erg Chegaga dunes and spending nights in authentic Berber camps under the stars was magical. Mimoun and his team were professional, friendly, and made the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a complete Moroccan desert adventure!
